Zeep’s people and things are dreamy shape-shifters, inhabiting a through-the-looking-glass world of swirly colours and textured rhythms. The London-based duo Nina Miranda and Chris Franck have a rich and varied background, with previous incarnations as Smoke “Underwater Love” City and Da Lata embracing trip-pop and Brazilian electronica. On their second album as Zeep they take folksy playful pop to a place where melody is king and levity isn’t a dirty word. Weaving around the whimsical lyrics, the music is knowing and inventive, with multi-instrumentalist Franck impressive on guitars, percussion, bass and Wurlitzer. The catchy opener ‘Elasticated Master Peace’ is a bouncy highlight. With an affectionate nod to Joni Mitchell, Miranda’s breezy vocals channel a 70s vibe, especially on ‘Light Your Touch’ and the lovely ‘Know More Now’. Zeep’s ingenious version of ‘Ghost Town’ renders Jerry Dammer’s haunting classic as a Brazilified lament on Rio’s urban breakdown. Many of their influences do lie in Brazil, and here and there bossa and samba join the lilting flow and English lyrics dissolve into Portuguese. Essentially though, this album feels rooted in Zeep’s own home-made planet, and an artisan attitude which has given them the freedom to paint their own rainbows and create a very personal and sophisticated sound.
